MINUTES OF IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE
OF THE
MISQUAMICUT FIRE DISTRICT

October 11, 2003

1.    Welcome by Dom Arminio Chairman

2.    Correspondence – None

3.    Agenda Items

  1. Fall Plantings – Mums have been planted at the beach houses and the 6 barrels. We will need to plant winter evergreens in November.

  1. Beach Signs – In the process of designing a standard sign with logo. Commercial signs continue to be an eye sore. Signs are handmade, posted every where, including sandwich signs on sidewalks, or nailed to telephone poles. Neil obtained the Westerly sign regulations and it is doubted that the majority of Misquamicut signs have permits. Need to clean up and eliminate the honky tonk appearance.

  1. Beautification Awards – Must ask the executive board for a list of names of people who have contributed to the Misquamicut District growth over the last 30 – 40 years. The annual Improvement Committee award will feature one of these people each year. Also need to identify recipients  for the awards including, people, sites, businesses, etc.

  1. Butt Cans – Carol is working on this important project.

  1. Adopt an Island – No response from Washington Trust. Will seek other sponsors.

  1. Emergency ID Passes – Norm is investigating this effort. Pete will get us the regulation.

  1. Beach Grass plantings – The window is April 1 – 15, 2004. We need to contact Michelle Vacca for resources. Also need price to present to Board.

  1. Donations from Tax Bills – Tax donations amount to about $3000. Must decide how to spend to continue the beautification effort. Possible projects include the Gazebo area, firehouse lawn, or a landscaped strip along the Lawton Ave and Benson Ave. beach parking lots. The parking lot strip would be the higher priority  choice and would create the most impact.

  1. Beach Houses – Over the winter the facilities will be improved. The houses need to be painted preferably, beach gray with white trim to fit into the district.

  1. Street signs – All are asked to check street name and no parking signs for possible replacement.

  1. District picnic and/or Breakfast – These events would be great for camaraderie and fund raising purposes.

  1. Crime Watch – Neighborhood crime watch was a high priority item in the past but does not seem to be supported at this point.

4. Adjournment
