Overall Responsibility:
To oversee the beach to ensure the water and beach safety of individuals using the Misquamicut Fire District Beaches. Assist neighboring lifeguards as needed. Cooperate with the state lifeguard supervisor and inspector as long as they do not interfere with the performance of your duties as a lifeguard.
REPORTS TO:
Lifeguard Captain, the Lifeguard Captain reports to the Beach Manager
AUTHORITY:
1. Closing any and all bathing areas whenever such action is deemed necessary during periods of severe surf, undertow and other emergency conditions in the interest of public safety. Whenever a bathing area has been closed because of the aforesaid conditions, lifeguards shall be retained on the beach to caution prospective bathers against entering the water.

3. Consulting with the Beach Manager on any safety concerns, problems or questions. Any disruption or concern shall be reported immediately to the Beach Manager.
4. The Lifeguard Captain is the direct supervisor of all beach lifeguards.
DUTIES:
Note: In addition to any Misquamicut Fire District rules and regulations all lifeguards shall be governed by the rules and regulations of the of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantation. RI State Lifeguard Surf Certification is required for this position.
1. As an employee, you are a representative of the Misquamicut Fire District, and must greet the patrons and guests politely and properly, in a friendly and courteous manner.
2. Remain constantly alert, monitor bathers at all times, remain at assigned chair or area until it is necessary to leave in order to perform duties, at which time notification shall be given to the nearest lifeguard.
3. Keep motorboats or other watercraft at reasonable distances, with regard to the safety of bathers. Request permission from the Westerly Harbor Patrol if needed.
4. Remain familiar with the operation of all lifesaving equipment in your area.
5. Monitor the area for alcohol consumption, notify Beach Manager if observed.
6. Provide record of rescues, assists and accidents by document in writing and provide to Beach Manager.
7. Keep all lifesaving equipment in your area available for immediate use and in perfect operating condition.
8. Keep the area between your post and the water line free from beach parties, umbrellas, beach chairs, etc.
9. Remove driftwood and other dangerous objects from the bathing area under your jurisdiction.
10. Know depths of water, currents, position of any holes or submerged rocks and conditions during both tides.
11. Minimize conversation with the public or with any other person including other lifeguards except as may be necessary in the performance of your duty.
12. Prevent individuals, other than duly assigned lifeguards, to trespass on any stand or use your equipment.
13. Keep any articles, other than lifeguard equipment and personal property, off your lifeguard stand.
14. Restrict ball playing in your assigned area to ensure safety of other patrons and guests.
15. Ensure holes being dug on beach do not create safety issues and are filled in.
16. Maintain good physical condition by swimming at least 440 yards each day.
17. Participate in life saving drills as required by the Lifeguard Supervisor.
18. Clean and rake assigned beach area assigned as needed to ensure general cleanliness and safety of the area work with the beach attendants to keep area free from debris.

6. Unless notified to the contrary, you must report at your assigned starting time regardless of weather.
7. In the event you will be absent, please notify the Lifeguard Supervisor or Beach Manager one hour before your assigned starting time.
8. At the discretion of the Beach Manager, on call may be implemented on rainy days. On call pay will be at 50% of your hourly rate. When on call, you must be able to be reached by phone and return to your job location within 30 minutes.
9. If beaches/complex are closed - there will be no hourly wage.
10. You will be paid on a bi-weekly payroll basis. Last pay check to be mailed or picked-up after Labor Day.
11. FICA, federal income taxes and state income taxes will be withheld from your pay.
